Lymphatic Drainage

Conditions Treated

  • Primary lymphedema, and secondary lymphedema that results from cancer treatments, general surgery, crush injuries, traumas or illness

Goals

  • To decrease the size of the swelling and decrease the density of the tissues in the affected area
  • To educate the client for self massage, safety, warning signs and management of swelling and to introduce exercises and information on how to progress activity and when to stop

Treatment

  • Manual lymphatic drainage to move fluid and protein to active drainage pathways
  • Recommendation of appropriate compression therapy
    (bandaging to reduce size and compression garment to maintain)
  • Client education on the lymphatic system, self massage, skin care, possible complications and exercises to help manage and prevent symptoms

Credentials

  • Certification in Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT). 152 hours of training.
